Malaga Wine

Malaga Designation of Origin, one of the oldest in Europe, originated in 1833. It was created to protect the prestigious wines of the time. Nowadays they protect so-called Still wines, which are made without alcohol. Among them two types of sweet wine should be distinguished, those from overripe grapes or made with raisin-grapes. The result can be dry, semi-dry, semisweet or sweet wines.

Churros with chocolate

The historical tradition of churros in our country has produced different denominations, varieties and recipes:‘ruedas’, ‘porras’, ‘churros madrileños’. The variety hat can be consideres as the authentic churro from Málaga, that is the ‘tejeringos’. The tejeringos, also known as jeringos, are the traditional churros in the province of Málaga (and also common in other areas of the south of Andalucía).

Axarquía Raisins

DO Málaga Raisins are an exclusive product from the region of the Axarquía and the municipality of Manilva. It is an ancestral product made from Muscatel grape. These, after being traditionally harvested, are dried in the sun with a natural tradition.

Locas

Locas are another variety of cakes from Málaga. They are peculiar, big and flavourful. They are made out of two pieces of puff pastry, one on top and one at the bottom. They are filled with custard and they are covered with egg yolk icing and a cherry. A delicacy for senses that will literally turn your palate crazy once you try a bite.

Hearty Eggs

The Natural Park Montes de Málaga's gastronomy is unique. Along Los Montes road or Colmenar road (A-7000) there are a number of restaurants that are popularly known as "ventas" (similar to an old-fashioned inn in the UK) that today form a culinary area that is different from anything else available in Málaga, both by their location and their specialties. Even though they offer a wide variety of dishes from various cuisines, most of the "ventas" serve the Plato de los Montes (Monte's dish) which consists of loin, chorizo, peppers, eggs and chips.

Porra Antequerana

Gazpacho and porra antequerana might be one of the most traditional dishes in our province. They use local ingredients to make them, such as tomato, pepper, olive oil, garlic, ham and egg, although the recipes can vary depending on the village. When it comes to ‘porra’, a famous one is ‘porra antequera’, traditional in the region of Antequera. It takes its name from the utensil used to plough in the mortar: the pestle. This dish is also called cold porra so as not to be confused with hot porra, which has the same ingredients but cooked and with black pudding or bacon on the side.

Fried eggplants with cane honey

Sugar cane was, until the 1980s, the most important crops in the province of Málaga. Popularly known as sweet cane, sugar was extracted from it in the several sugar mills there were in the coast of Málaga. In fact, cane honey is used in the cuisin from Axarquía and the rest of the province. It can be used as a dressing for cod omelettes, fried aubergine and even meat dishes. It is used to create a wide variety of desserts (puddings, yogurts) or even drinks and smoothies.

Malaga style salad

Potatoes, oranges, cod, onions, olives, parsley, extra virgin olive oil & salt. A summer dish due to its freshness that is full of strong and distinctive flavours. A great example of Mediterranean food that allows you to make the most of the local produce in a healthy way. Keep your waistline trim with this delicious dish!

Gazpachuelo

Gazpachuelo: it is known in some villages as ‘sopita de los difuntos’ (soup of the death) because, as it is easy to make and comforting, it was served in funerals that were held in the family house. That is the origin of the idiom ‘gazpachuelo, comida de duelos’ (‘gazpachuelo, food of grief’).

Pescaito Frito

Málaga owns a fishing ground that can provide Costa del Sol with its famous ‘pescaíto’. Horse mackerels, sardines, fresh anchovies or red mullets are some of the products that go from the coast of Málaga to the chiringuitos and many homes in Málaga.

Migas

The Migas ("crumbs") dish is also unique to this area, which consists of bread usually with strips of loin or chorizo. They also serve kid goat meat, suckling lamb from Málaga, deer and wild boar.

If you want to buy native cultural products in Malaga, (from food to souvenirs) we recommend you visit our main markets, such as Mercado Atarazanas. Of course, you can find souvenirs in the center of the city or with your tourist discounts in the shopping area in Terminal A, B and El Palmeral. Since Malaga is a tourist place, it is also easy to find typical food products in any supermarket.

Eating out on the Costa del Sol is an absolute pleasure. You'll be amazed by the variety of restaurants and the exceptional quality of the gourmet menus available. The majority of restaurants have an outdoor seating area, and the wonderful climate means you can enjoy al fresco dining all year round.
